London International Animation Festival (LIAF) 2019

Industry Events  |  29 November 2019 - 8 December 2019

Venue: Barbican Centre. Silk St, London

The London International Animation Festival proudly showcases the whole spectrum of creative animation, showing that animation is for everyone.

Founded in 2003, LIAF aims to dispel the popular misconception that animation is just cartoons for kids by screening the broadest possible range of intelligent, entertaining and provocative current films on offer from all around the world as well as retrospectives and specialised sessions from countries and animators who don’t normally elicit such attention.

Our annual 10-day Festival includes gala premieres, retrospectives, Q&A’s with filmmakers, workshops, audience voting, and the Best of the Festival screening. LIAF has grown to become much more than an annual Festival –  programming more events, tours, screenings and masterclasses all year-round to a whole host of cities and countries.

This year, the Opening Gala ‘Female Figures 2019 – to boldly go…'(15*) programme has been curated by Abigail Addison at Animate Projects, who will lead a post-screening conversation with featured animators Katerina AthanasopoulouFlóra Anna Buda, and Chiara Sgatti, plus experimental animation academic Lilly Husbands.

The festival will also feature a series of panel discussions exploring some of the hot topics in Animation, a review of big issues from the last year, curated and chaired by Saint John Walker. Among the four panels is ‘We Need to Talk about Skills – One Year On’, featuring discussion of the Animation UK 2018 Skills Report, the impact it had on highlighting skills gaps in the UK animation industry, and questions raised regarding developing new talent.
