CAKE and TV Asahi announce major international TV distribution partnership

Leading kids’ entertainment specialist CAKE and premier Japanese broadcaster and media powerhouse TV Asahi have announced a major international television distribution partnership on the celebrated anime franchise Doraemon, a legendary brand that has spanned over 55 years.

The landmark partnership will see CAKE spearhead the international distribution of the iconic animation catalogue in the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and EMEA excluding Italy, Spain, Portugal and Turkey. CAKE and TV Asahi will also produce a new English-language version with the aim of refreshing the Doraemon library for English-speaking audiences and introducing a timeless Japanese icon to new viewers.

The series follows Doraemon, a time-travelling cat-type robot, who is sent from the future to help Nobita, a well-meaning but clumsy young boy. Armed with an endless assortment of futuristic secret gadgets, pulled from his four-dimensional pocket, Doraemon helps him navigate everyday childhood challenges and school life, in extraordinary sci-fi adventures and heart-warming stories. With its timeless humour and universal themes, Doraemon is celebrated for its core values of optimistic problem-solving, deep friendship, and emotional resonance. 

Widely recognized as Asia’s favourite children’s character, Doraemon started as manga created by FUJIKO F FUJIO in 1970, and has since evolved into a multimedia business. Today, its commercial legacy spans over 300 million comic books sold worldwide, an extensive 1300-plus episode television catalogue that consistently dominates ratings and a significant consumer products footprint. Furthermore, its active theatrical division delivers a new hit feature film every year. With a cumulative series audience surpassing 100 million, Doraemon continues to break records as the number-one Japanese film franchise of all time. Doraemon’s appeal extends well beyond its home market, with the series broadcasting on major channels in over 70 countries and territories, beloved by audiences of all ages.
